Earth Days of Action
Time: 4-6pm
Location: Blind Whino @ 700 Delaware Avenue SW

On April 24, Dreaming Out Loud, Inc. (DOL) will partner with Broccoli City and Toyota Green Initiative for an Earth Day of Action at DOL’s unique urban farm located at Blind Whino (700 Delaware Avenue SW). On this day of action, participants are invited to be a part of building one of the City’s most unique centers of learning and community impact in urban agriculture.
This is an opportunity for residents, students, and community members to participate in a community-based event to support the District’s youth. Through the Aya Youth Cooperative, DOL works with youth, ages 14-21, to become workforce ready, develop entrepreneurial and service skills through urban agriculture and the food system.

On the Day of Action, our staff and youth farmers will guide participants as they assist in:

  • Garden and community clean up activities.
  • Placing 15 cubic yards of organic compost/topsoil into raised beds and fabric grow bags.
  • Building raised bed gardens and trellis network.
  • Planting spring and summer crops for the garden space.
  • Assist in maintenance of compost bins.

I recently became a pescatarian because its better for myself, and my planet.

    • Yoli’s Green Living Staff

Fish is such a huge sustainability issue now. Wild caught is better but depleting the fish sources. While farm raised isn’t always the best. It is certainly an issue we will address soon on the site.

Ever since the Toyota Green Initiative partnership with VSU in 2011 I can NOT throw away a plastic bottle. I know that may seem small, but I drink a lot of water lol!
Just recently I have also been trying to recycle my clothes, helping my closet, and hopefully helping the world.

    • Yoli’s Green Living Staff

AWWWWW thanks Chelle for sharing. We’ll be sure to share with the TGI members. This made our day.

I am all about supporting my environment by reducing, reusing and recycling. I started recycling newspapers when I was about 10 and have been an advocate for the planet in as many ways as possible. A special shout out to Captain Planet for educating me way back when. I’ve been a Planeteer ever since.

    • Yoli’s Green Living Staff

Captain planet is our spirit brother lol.

we have one enviorment, one earth, one home. we can’t ruin it and expect everythign to be all right. people need not to exceed what they need and be happy with the basic things we need. Making sure we don’t waste our water, electricty, try to walk or ride a bike, or use public transportation. hopefully we can reach a day when we are one with our planet again it will be a mutually beneficial relationship.

    • Yoli’s Green Living Staff

Such a lovely concept of having a mutually beneficial relationship with nature. Hopefully we will find that balance!

I have been “green” since I was a child! It started with Captain Planet and I have been going strong ever since. I stay green by:
Recycling EVERYTHING! – plastic, glass, aluminum, clothes, furniture
Reduce my consumption of items that are not earth friendly
Purchase local to reduce carbon footprint
    Reuse items whenever I can
    Compost
Drive a hybrid car and walk when I can
Support businesses that use local resources, provide filtered water and compostable products
Purchase products made from recycled materials – clothes, bags, paper, etc.
    Use biodegradable cleaning supplies

    • Yoli’s Green Living Staff

I think people forget that supporting a local business who source locally is a form of being green. Thanks for sharing!

As renter’s of this earth, it’s imperative that we teach- one- reach-one. Its not being on a soapbox preaching and seeing who can yell the furthest. Its about action. We all can just do something. This is why this is important. This is why we are important.

    • Yoli’s Green Living Staff

Such a dope concept i.e. we are renting the earth. We certainly don’t own it.

I try my best to eat and use products that are as whole to the natural state as possible. This means buying fresh produce and even melting down and mixing my own shea butter for my hair and skin. It’s also important for me to educate my friends and family on ways to live sustainable.

    • Yoli’s Green Living Staff

Such a good idea Portia. We are big fans of DIY beauty.

I stay green by recycling everything I possibly can and going with everything that’s energy efficient….light bulbs, appliances, etc.

    • Yoli’s Green Living Staff

Thank you for recycling. Most of the larger stores actually take back items you purchase like Home Depot accept light bulbs, batteries etc.

  • Khristina Monte

Green means me continually recycling and using
biodegradable products … Cleaning up after strangers and instilling these
beliefs on my nephews, nieces and godchildren because they are who we will rely
on when we are old and grey…

    • Yoli’s Green Living Staff

That is awesome. Playing it forward!
