I became familiar with Moo.com first through Klout. I’ve received sample cards and ordered from moo.com in the past, particularly their mini-cards, stickers, facebook cards, and business cards. Having over 10 years of experience in graphic design, I have used many printing companies. The quality of the cards from moo.com are impeccable with a heavy card stock and strong pigments that bring images to life. So imagine my excitement (and skepticism) when Moo announced they had new green business cards. My skepticism was based on an assumption that the cards would perhaps be flimsy and grainy.
Moo.com gave me an opportunity to design and order a set of the green cards to review and they did not disappoint. The green card stock is created from 100% Post Consumer Waste and is FSC (Forest Stewards Council) certified. According to the FSC, “The U.S. is the largest market for paper products in the world, producing 90 million tons of paper annually and, in-turn, consuming about 100 million tons. Despite improved technologies for refining post consumer pulp, virgin fiber is still a significant requirement, as only 35% of current consumption is met by using recycled fiber; in addition, approximately 25% of recovered fiber is exported out of US markets. Roughly 25% by volume of timber cut annually in the US is used for paper production.”
That is a lot of paper that we know gets wasted.
The cards sourced are process chlorine and acid free, made in compliance with the standards set for alkaline papers, and with electricity generated by renewable, non polluting wind power from Green-e. “Green-e is the nation’s leading independent consumer protection program for the sale of renewable energy and greenhouse gas reductions in the retail market.”1.
What makes the system of design stand out is that you have so many options, including having a different picture on every card. While the price point may on the higher side then most card printing places, the distinction is the quality and design options make it a justifiable expense. I get complements on my cards and even the recycled box it arrived in all the time. The right photo plus the right print turned my card into a statement piece and creates brand identity.
