NYFW F/W 12 + SMW :: Recap Part II

Texture on the Runway

I sent my sister-spondents Julienne (Julie) and Bernardine (Berna) to cover this epic event.

The Texture On The Runway Show was such a spectacular event. With the incorporation of Hair and Style this event was just astonishing. The Models Looked amazing as well as the venue. The whole evening was just committed to natural hair and its texture, being able to feel beautiful and free with natural curly, wavy and kinky hair. This Event was quite an experience for me. Being there actually convinced me into giving up my beautiful weave for some precious natural curls. This atmosphere was just so full of curls, waves and kinks, long, short and medium lengths hair. The products that were advertised were also a huge plus from matrix to Unleashed Curls Hair Company. I was also pleased with that staff who were |so knowledgeable with the products that were being advertised, which really sold me in to my decision to give up my hair weave. I was amazed with the gift bags, which offered full bottled products such as Matrix, Arrojo, Curls Unleashed, Minardi Color Care and samples of Hair Rules, Curls and more. Overall the event and the experience along with it was just stupendous! – Julie

Meet the Afropolitans :: #SMW

I’m an Afropolitan! Ngozi of Society HAE asked me to pose for a new exhibit being produced by Delphine Fawundu featuring Afropolitans. Subsequently, for social media week, a panel featuring some progressive thinkers in this space.

Armed with new media as their tools, Africans on the continent and in the diaspora are charting new paths and opportunities for themselves. Challenging perceptions, they provide the global community with a first hand look at contemporary African art and culture. These young visionaries, often dubbed “Afropolitans,” reach beyond their borders to connect and collaborate with their contemporaries around the world. “Meet The Afropolitans” is an invitation to experience the next wave in African music, art and culture as well as meet some of the creative thinkers using social media and digital tools to provide the world with an alternative view of Africa.

Korto Momolu :: #NYFW

Thanks to team FAAG Studio, I had an opportunity to attend Korto Momolu’s 2012 Presentation. With a league of stunning models, dramatic but wearable pieces, and jewelry by LL Cool J’s wife, Simone I. Smith, this presentation courted a large attendance. The dresses combined a Victorian sensibility with modern and feminine flare.

Emerge Fashion Show :: #NYFW

This is my second year attending the Emerge Fashion show, which showcases new and upcoming designers. For 2012, Diane Von Furstenberg presented the Fashion Innovator Award (FIA) to Vogue’s Contributing Editor Andre’ Leon Talley. Previous Fashion Innovator award recipients have included Constance C.R. White, Editor-in-Chief of ESSENCE Magazine who was presented her award by designer Tracy Reese. “The Fashion Innovator Award to true legends within the industry, who have made a large impact in the fashion industry worldwide and paved the way for designers.”- Dionne Williams (Emerge! creator and producer).

Farah Angsana :: #NYFW

A packed house for Farah Angsana cooed for the beautifully, feminine dresses. Golds, creams, sparkles galore were the highlights of the flowing piece. I want what as the the orange goddess dresses with gold detail in the image above. The jewel tones and rich layers conveyed an image of a woman who is bold and travels the world. What woman doesn’t want to be THAT woman? I do and surely look forward to seeing her future collections.

#webchixconnected :: #SMW

I was happy I choose to attend this particular social media week event because I got to see the film screening of Connected and be in a room of tech savvy women. Connected is an autoblogography by @tiffanyshlain. Afterwards, there was a panel discussing not only the film but the role of women in tech. The post screening panel discussion featured She Says U.S., Girls in Tech NY, FAB NY and Girl Approved alongside Sandra Ordonez (Joomla) and Amy Vernon who was recognized by Mashable and The Huffington Post as a social media maven to follow. It was a validating experience as I consider myself a lady in tech and find opportunities for us to network and be in relation very limited. Kudos to Digital Girls Club!
